Foxtail millet (Setaria italica)

A
 number of different small grain grasses  are  called  millets. Small  millets  are  a traditional dry land staple meal and are well known as Nutri-cereals due to their high nutrient content. 
Foxtail millet is a annual grass grown for human food. Second most widely planted species of millet. Most grown millet species in Asia and Europe. Hardly water needed –200ml to 300ml –1kg foxtail millet. Grow in drought like condition, dry land. 
 
Fox tail Millet -resemble fox tail. Indian Millet-found mostly in Italian mountain consume by Europeans that’s why it call Italian Millet. Unpolished foxtail millet Yellow colour(consuming), Polished millet (White). It is a alkaline, glutan free, low glycemic index millet. Consists of Thiol –Thiamine – sulphur group. It is high in carbohydrates. It has double quantity of protein content compared to rice. It contains minerals such as copper & iron. It provides a host of nutrients, has a sweet nutty flavor and is considered to be one of the most digestible and non -allergic grains
 
 
1. One of the most important functions of foxtail millet is maintaining good nervous health.
2. Protects Bone health and muscle health- Foxtail millet is a good source of Iron and Calcium, Iron is essential for the maintenance of the health of muscles. 
3. Good for Cardiac Health- Vitamin B1 assists in the formation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which helps to transfer the message between muscle and nerves.
4. Regulates blood sugar level- Foxtail millets are rich in fiber content which is very essential in regulating blood sugar levels. L ow glycemic index (50.8) of this millet is a very good alternative for diabetics
5. Lowering Blood Cholesterol- Foxtail millet contains amino acids (Lecithin and Methionine) which lessen the cholesterol level by driving out the excess fat from the Liver.
6. Helps in Good digestion- it’s a good fiber source it helps in curing constipation in kids as well as adults.
7. Helps for weight loss- Foxtail contains an amino acid (Tryptophan) which will trim your appetite and help to tighten your belly.
8. Improves Immunity- Foxtail millet is a good source of many vitamins and minerals it helps us build strong immunity.
 
 
In Siddha medicine, prepared food (Flour) from Foxtail millet is used to alleviate Vatha and kapha humors and induce appetite.
Cooked rice from foxtail millet improves physical strength and it is used in pregnant women to reduce odema.
